Skittles Evening

Long Alley Skittles at The Cranmer Arms. Even if you don't want to join in the games, you're very welcome to join us. We'll be having a buffet, and there will be plenty of time for a chat over drinks. You can book your place at the AGM or by telephoning the Secretary on 0115 937 3588.

If you can't remember or don't know how it's played, you can read the rules, but bear in mind that there are a number of regional and local variations.

As well as different rules, the equipment varies from place to place - it seems that in Welsh Skittles, the Rhondda pins are shortest at about 8 inches, those around Newport slightly taller, but in Glamorgan (the Vale?) they are taller still at about 10 inches. It seems as if skittles isn't played in the north - is that correct? If you've ever played skittles in Wales, perhaps you can tell us on the evening.

Long Alley Skittles is mostly played in Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and Derbyshire. The alley is a little over 30 feet long, the pins are more than a foot in height, and the cheese is either a ball, traditionally made from applewood, or (in Leicestershire) barrel shaped.
